Research into our chosen genre - Crime Drama

The genre of film that we finally chose to do was a crime drama. I analysed two film openings from my favourite crime dramas, which was Harry Brown and Ill Manors.

Harry Brown

The film starts and focuses on a group of teenagers/young adults in an underpass somewhere in London. The area around has graffiti on the walls which already implies that the area is quite rough and the people in that area don’t have much respect for authorities. One member of the group appears to be taking part in a gang initiation and the whole gang is dressed like lower class people and that is the standard way that people who break the law usually look like. They speak slang so it gives off the impression they are uneducated. The man in focus appears to be smoking drugs and once he has he is then given a gun. All of these things are often associated with crime and the people and area involved is quite rough and is known to be rough by people around the world so people know that it is a crime drama.

There is then a rough transition to what is portrayed to be a home filmed video of two youths riding around a council estate on a moped, they then drive past a young mother with her child swearing and try to scare her by shooting around her with the gun he was given earlier in the scene, he accidently shoots and kills her. The ride away fast and get hit by a HGV and it looks like they have both died. This conforms to codes and conventions as there already a lot of drama built up before the film has even started and the audience will then know what to expect and will want to watch more. There is a lot of crime drama built up especially as it all revolves around the rough area that they are in and more than one crime has already been committed and it therefore has the basic characteristics of a crime drama.

Ill Manors

It starts off with a man lighting a cigarette before anything else has been seen which gives off the impression of a negative background which is expected in crime films. The man is sat smoking in a small room, which is probably his bedroom where he is watching TV on a TV which is small and this gives off the impression that he is working class, which is also common in crime films. A narrator is speaking over an establishing shot of a council estate, the narrator speak quite low class and is almost rapping the narration. It then changes to a beat showing some rough areas and the props of drugs are used very much in the opening sequence and means that the characters in this film will mostly be involved in drugs and violence. There are more establishing shots of rough area. There is a rap song played over the top off this which basically explains the lifestyle that they lead. There are many phones which imply that there are drug dealers which mean they do not abide by the law. These are typical in crime drama films as it involves drugs and violence, the violence will mostly come from people selling or buying these drugs and it fits the genre well. It fits in well as it creates some suspense or drama as well as the use of crime which will make you want to watch more, and will then create drama throughout the film because of the uncertainty of the lifestyle that they lead.
